Death: [Cheap] Food For Thought
I had an epiphany after watching Appointment in Samarra. The theme of unnatural events causing a disruption to the balance of the universe got me thinking about the storyarc. I thought instead of writing an episode review, I am going to share with you my theory on Death and his role on the show.
Supernatural's take on Death is a very interesting one. The writers have given Death a personality. He is not a hooded mysterious scary old man. In fact he is not scary at all. He has one job to do, and one job only. If God is at the starting point of human lives, then Death is on the other end of our lives, waiting to collect our souls when our time is up. It's a simple equation. There shouldn't be any complication. It is like a waterfall model -- you born, you live, you die. It is a natural progression. God and Death book-end our lives.
You are not supposed to cheat Death. But what if something happens to you? What if there is some sort of intervention and you no longer live as a human?
In the event of a supernatural situation occurred, say, when a vampire turned a human into one of their kind as depicted in Dead Man's Blood or Live Free or Twi-Hard, this normal human being became immortal. One less 'human soul' for Death to collect. And according to the Alpha in Live Free or Twi-Hard, when their kind died, they'd go to Purgatory.
Another example. In All Dogs Go to Heaven, skinwalkers infiltrated into ordinary families. On the Alpha's signal, they would turn their human families into their skinwalkers simultaneously. This would be the fastest way to build an army. Many normal human lives would be altered, possibly without their souls intact after they're turned. Death's list is just getting shorter.
Let's take a look at Dean and Sam. How many times have they died and be brought back to life by either demons, angels or God? As a result of this, I believe Death is getting a bit frustrated. While we think it's funny to watch Dean died like at least 105 times in an episode alone, may be Death doesn't find it funny at all.
The numbers of lives by God created should equal to the numbers of souls collected by Death. What happen if it doesn't equate? What's Death's view on it? If I am Death, I will be saying: "Hang on a second here, I'm supposed to take X number of souls, you supernatural creatures caused all these disruptions and ruined my job!' Death can't be out of job, right? How many human souls have Death lost due to any kind of supernatural intervention?
As we have seen in season 6 so far, things are getting bit out of hand. Why are the Alphas of different supernatural kinds so desperate for building their armies fast? Why are monsters acting off-pattern? They are fighting for domination and survival.
Do monsters have souls? I guess not, that's why they are called monsters, right? And their kind only have one place to go after they die -- Purgatory. I think Death is only limited to reap human souls, he doesn't have the ability to reap monsters simply because they are soulless.
My theory is that Death has an important part to play in the season half of season 6. I think he is attempting to get rid of the existence of all supernatural creatures on earth. He is going to end this disruption to the balance of the universe. He wants things to return to balance.
How is Dean & Sam going to play a role in this scheme of things? Dean and Sam are great hunters, they are valuable assets. If Death's power is limited to human souls, then he needs good hunters like Dean and Sam to eliminate monsters and helped maintaining the natural order. Unlike the angel Balthazar who has his own agenda and clearly doing something dodgy, Death's intention is clear. Death's purpose is simple -- to reap human souls.
Death wants Dean to keep digging about this soul thing. He wants Dean to discover something himself, whatever they might be. He wants Dean to understand something. Death is teaching Dean a lesson. This lesson starts with retrieving Sam's soul from hell. Death warns Dean about the success rate of putting a wall in Sam's mind. Once Sam starts scratching, he will break and he will die. And when Sam dies (again), I think this will be the end of the series. Because I think Death will have the balance returns by then, he will demonstrate this natural order to Dean by taking Sam with him for good. Dean and Sam must learn when you're dead, you should stay dead. When you are human, you should die human.
I am sure there are a lot of holes in my theory. Let me know what you think and how do you see the role of Death in the rest of the season. I just think that he is not a support act and after watching Appointment in Samarra, I am convinced he has a very important role to play.
Appointment in Samarra was a great great episode! It was written by Sera Gamble and Robert Singer, directed by Mark Rohl.
Death: You and your brother keep coming back. You're an affront to the balance of the universe, and you cause disruption on a global scale.
Dean: I apologize for that.
Death: But you have use. Right now you're digging at something, intrepid detective. I want you to keep digging, Dean.
Dean: So you just gonna be cryptic or...?
Death: It's about the souls. You'll understand when you need to.
Everything is dust in the wind.

Review: Supernatural 6.10 Caged Heat
This review is a bit long overdue. With Xmas is just a traffic light away, I feel like I am running out of time to shop for pressies, trying out different cookies recipes etc. I have so much random thoughts about Caged Heat! It was action packed. This is what I am talking about! Caged Heat was no doubt in my mind the best episode this season so far.
After a slow start of the season, Supernatural seems to return to the monster of the week pattern, but the show has been feeding us clues which are contributing to a bigger storyarc. I think the season half of the season is going to blow Castiel's wings off. Season 6 is putting all the previous ingredients together -- i.e reapers, vampires, shape-shifters, demons and angels just to name a few. I think it's forming a dough, it's just resting in the fridge. When time comes, the writers will take out the dough, roll it out and cut them in shapes, get them ready for the hot oven. Cookies anyone?
RANDOM THOUGHTS
Crowley -- Finding Purgatory is important to Crowley and to find Purgatory, I think Crowley has to die to find it. I don't think this is the last we see him and I think Castiel may have done a favour for Crowley and he doesn't even know it! Assuming this is correct, what is Crowley going to do in Purgatory? Is it about power? Is another war coming? Whose war?
Meg -- What about Meg? When it comes to Meg, is it just about power, putting Team YED or Team Luci back in the driver's seat, at least in hell anyway? With YED, Lilith, Ruby all dead and Luci locked up in a cage, Meg should be next on the chain of command. If it wasn't Crowley, Meg would've been in charge. That's just how I feel about Meg, but is there more to her arc?
Sam -- Sam struggled with the idea of having a soul -- pain and suffering are just part of the package. Let say if Sam's soul is forced back into his body, it's going to kill him in every emotional way. Dean was in hell for 4 months, that's 40 years and he struggled. Sam is in hell for a year now and he is still here, that's at least 100 years in hell. If I were Sam, I wouldn't want my soul back!
As per usual, Dean is obsessed about saving Sam. And if he could, he would save everyone. Dean leaves nobody behind and he ain't going to leave his brother in the crap hole. To Dean, having a damaged soul is better than having no soul. Cas made a good point, we just don't know what is going to happen or how bad it will get if Sam's soul is back. Sam doesn't have a say here, if Dean says he is going to have his soul back, he is going to have his soul back! For any complications, they will just have to deal with it. Is this a wise move?
The Civil War of Heaven -- So far, it's been mentioned a few times. We don't know how it will play out or whether it will play a bigger part in the second half of season 6 or indeed its role in the overall storyarc. But there are a few things we know: we know there is a civil war in Heaven. We know Balthazar stole some holy weapons. We now know the Ark of the Covenant exists, it is missing and it is on Castiel's 'to-find-list.' Supernatural doesn't mention something without follow it through. I hope the Ark will play a part in coming episodes. I mean, how awesome would it be to have Cas looking for it and seeing the boys to retrieve it. I love stuff like this! I love Raiders!
Grandpa Samuel -- Sacrificing for each other is the trademark of the Winchesters. The Winchesters is all about saving people, hunting things. The Campbells we see in season 6 are quite the opposite. That aside, grandpa is just one of those characters I feel sorry for, I see his desperation, but I wish he could be the dad/grandpa Mary and the boys could look up to and not just a desperate douche who would sell his grandsons to the demons!
He is disconnected to the Winchesters, fine! He wasn't there when Mary married John (he never liked John anyway..), he wasn't there when Mary was pregnant with Dean and Sam. It wasn't his fault that he missed all the actions. But Dean and Sam are blood, they are not strangers to him. For him to say to Dean 'I don't even know what you are to me' is really messed up. He is too blind to understand what Dean is trying to tell him. If he continues to live, he is going to die alone. Grandpa is just not awesome!
On another note, there is no doubt Mary and John are still very much in the picture! Ash said he couldn't find Mary and John in heaven, may be they are there, may be they aren't. But if they aren't in heaven, where are they? John escaped hell in AHBLII and Mary appeared as a spirit in Home. Could John be still out and about? Could Mary be stuck in Purgatory after she 'died' again in Home as a spirit? I still hope we will see JDM again before Supernatural ends.
Caged Heat was directed by Robert Singer, story by Brett Matthews and Jenny Klein, written by Brett Matthews.
Another delay review on Death and Cheap Food will be posted later in the week. I am working on an exciting theory to share with you. Stay tuned!

I don't care about many things (like Ryan Reynolds).. but Supernatural is not one of them
I love you! I just love you! Devin Faraci from Badass Digest wrote this amazing article on Supernatural -- Will SUPERNATURAL ever get respect? I need to hug you! Supernatural fans, read the articles here.
The show has great writing, great cast, great music and great direction. The show is funny, the one-liners are killers. And above all things, everyone on the show respects the materials and grateful for being part of something unique. Supernatural has never had a flat episode, there is always something I like about an episode, even the not so awesome ones like Bugs.
Supernatural is super clever. The thing I love about Supernatural is that the writers put so much thoughts into the construct of the story. They do heaps of research on the subject matters whether they be monsters or angels. On one hand, the subject matter is something we are familiar with (like how many lores are there on vampires and shape-shifters, right?). But on the other hand, Supernatural writers manage to put their own creative stamp on the idea every week. Each episode is carefully crafted, I cannot name an episode that was sloppy.
Kudos to the creator of the show, Eric Kripke. He has no ego, he has low self-esteem, he is unique, he is humble and he is super weird! What's on his mind -- I don't want to know! Killing Santa and Mrs Santa is an awful but awesome idea! Kripke is almost like Joss Whedon, but sorry Whedon fans, Kripke is better. (And I love Joss too). Kripke is not JJ Abram or Alan Ball, hell Kripke is not even listed as one of the top 50 showrunners by Hollywood Reporters. But you know what, who cares?! Long live Cult Kripke..
Kripke is writing and will be directing an episode for season 6. I can't wait to watch it! I am also super excited about any ideas Kripke has in mind about his next project, whatever that is, I will be watching!! Bring it!

Supernatural fans, you're awesome! Give yourself a purple nurple for a great job well done!!! Supernatural is the winner of the TVGuide magazine's recent fan poll. I am so excited, I don't know where to start!!! Ok.. let's start by this!
I seriously don't think Jensen and Jared need to be photoshop'd. They are smoking HOT! And they know it! We know! Dang! Now we have to share with the world!
Apparently this guy was left out, according to his own tweet: '"The public is not ready for that kind of raw, unbridled, sexual magnetism." Misha Collins commented on his Twitter. HA! Misha! You're hot and yes, the public is not ready.. your hotness will burn their eyes!
Jensen, Jared, Jim and Misha thanked fans for being so awesome!
Here is Debra Birnbaum, editor of TVGuide magazine revealing the cover on The Early Show on CBS. KICK ASS!!!
