Arrow -- The Series Premiere Review

This Week in TV -- ARROW: The Series Premiere

Every now and then, the press and TV critics will come to an agreement that a great show is born. From what I can see, the press and TV critics are unanimous about ARROW. I have been told by those who have seen the Pilot that I am going to love it! The CW and DC have been doing a great job in promoting the show. In recent weeks, I see nothing but positive feedback from the media. There is so much love for this show already. On Twitter, EW calls ARROW not only it is "the network’s best new show, it’s also one of the the best freshman fall shows." When the series premiere aired on Wednesday and it was the number one trending topic on Twitter.

ARROW is a show that I have been dying to watch because I like Justin Hartley's Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen (Smallville) enough to check out this show. I think ARROW has an existing fanbase, and The CW has been keen to hold on to Smallville…I mean, hold on to audience who are comic book fans, males and females! I mean, Stephen Amell is a hottie. The show has the 'the girls are gonna love him and the guys will want to have a Amell six-pack' vibe to it. It is a VERY COOL SHOW! If there must be a comparison, ARROW is closer to Batman Begin than Smallville.

The Pilot was directed by David Nutter. It is written by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (story), and Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim (teleplay). David Nutter is a legend, he has directed many awesome shows including Smallville, Dark Angel, Roswell, Supernatural and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. You may know Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) and Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe). A few familiar names are also attached to the show in some capacity. Guy Bee (Supernatural) has directed an episode and Geoff Johns has also written for an episode already.

Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC -- who penned a number of mind-blowing episodes for Smallville including Absolute Justice (season nine) -- has written episode seven for ARROW. This episode will feature Huntress, I have no idea who she is. This is great news, right? Geoff Johns is the king of geeks, and he knows his stuff.  He always known for reviving/ re-introducing characters such as Hawkman, Dr Fate, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. So I'd be interested to find out more about Huntress. I don't know too much about comics, as I have mentioned it on a number of occasion, but whenever I see his name attached to Smallville, he made headlines. I see how exciting the fans and the press were. So it is a big deal to see Geoff Johns writing for ARROW. In fact, I'd be surprised if the producers didn't ask him to collaborate for ARROW. His contribution is a sign that the show has tremendous support from DC. It's a great thing!

Another thing I am looking forward to is Katie Cassidy. I always like her portrayal as the Original Ruby in Supernatural, I have seen a bit of her in Gossip Girl, 90210 and New Girl, I think while these roles are not great, but her performance is always sharp. I think
ARROW is her best role to date and I can't wait to see her shine as Laurel Lance/ Black Canary. Laurel totally has the Rachel Dawes vibe. But she'd kick Katie Holmes' ass. She is Black Canary and I hope we will get to see that on the show. At the end of the episode, when Laurel has this smirk on her face, I was kinda half-expecting to get a hint of her being a superhero too. But I don't think we will see that just yet.

What about the new Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen, Stephen Amell? I admit, I have not heard of him before and I certainly not seen Hung or Private Practice, and I was one of those people who think Justin Hartley should carry on as Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen. But it is what is it. I was actually very reserved about the casting. But boy, am I wrong?! I am sold! Stephen Amell is brilliant as Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen in ARROW. It's amazing to see how convincing he is as Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen. The acting, the action, the look, the bow and arrow skills, the whole package. When he came on my screen, I nodded and said, "YUP! HE IS GREEN ARROW!!" Hey, I like Hawkeye/Barton, but I think Green Arrow/ Queen will kick his ass if they get into a fight.

Other few quick thoughts on the Pilot:

-- Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files) as Quentin Lance -- I knew he looked familiar!

-- Random Docter -- He is Hiro Kanagawa aka Mr Nuttercracker Game Show Host from Supernatural's Changing Channels

-- Oliver's mother, Moira (Susanna Thompson) -- She totally has the Angela Petrelli or Lionel Luther vibe.

-- The Island as Purgatory -- I love that, especially when Purgatory is a prominent location on Supernatural.

-- The cast has good chemistry. However, Thomas and Speedy are not working for me yet. And I LIKED Speedy in Smallville. Not sure if it's the same Speedy.

-- The Queen's Housekeeping -- Will she become 'Alfred' one day for Oliver?

-- I like the fact that everyone is treating Oliver like an idiot, but he is kicking ass when they don't see it.

-- The soundtrack -- I hope they stick to this soundtrack, which I like very much. It took me awhile to get used to the pop songs as featured on Smallville, especially in the earlier seasons. There isn't anything wrong with using pop songs, but let's not make it too 90210.

-- The Queen Mansion -- I swear that's like the Luthor Mansion. The show is shot in Vancouver, so perhaps they use the Smallville's old set. Source: GreenArrowTV.

My first impression of ARROW is that this show GOT IT. Stephen Amell GOT IT. Katie Cassidy GOT IT! The dialogues, story and action GOT IT! This show has it all. ARROW is a lot darker than Lois and Clark, and Smallville. It looks very mature from the get-go. It has the Batman Begin vibe. Stephen Amell is as cool as Christian Bale, but there is something very warm about Amell. May be because I am following him on Twitter? The Pilot was brilliant! Very smooth! It sets up the story nicely. It almost looks like a movie. And this Pilot should've been a two-hour premiere if it was up to me!

I think Oliver Queen is very well established in the Pilot. There is not confusion about his character, he has a plan, he knows what he wants. He is very cool headed and he is very similar to Batman/ Bruce Wayne in a way. Unlike Superman/ Clark Kent or Chuck Bartowski, Green Arrow has no problem in killing bad guys. I hope ARROW's Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen won't go through the same angst and depression as Justin Hartley's character on Smallville. I would rather not see this again. I get the whole hero's complex thing, but I guess we will see if and when that happens on ARROW. Stephen Amell's Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen is a lot cooler than I expect. He has this look on his face and it's stone cold sometimes when he is in his Green Arrow mode. And his interpretation is A LOT cooler than Justin Hartley's Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen, who was a lot more relax and very upfront with his playboy, smartass personality the first time he appeared on Smallville. Amell's performance is what ARROW needs. I wonder if his contract say he has to go topless in every episode like Captain Awesome and Justin Hartley?

Superhero movies are no strangers to the theatres, audience love them, but their chance of survival is very slim on the small screen. Smallville was the only long standing television drama in recent years. Didn't somebody try to do Wonder Woman? Other popular superheroes such as Superman, Spiderman and Batman are all off limit for TV creators, unless they are animation. The CW's decision to do ARROW is a smart move. The network has the fanbase and ARROW can bring back those who stuck with Smallville all these years. The show can attract fans who appreciate a good superhero story, regardless whether it be on a big screen or small screen. I think ARROW marks another fresh era of live action superhero shows on TV. And don't forget, Joss Whedon is also working his magic for Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. These shows will set the trend for the next few years! As DC and Marvel go head-to-head and bring the fight from the big screen to the small screen, the entertainment only get bigger and better and fans will benefit from it the most. Both DC and Marvel will continue to dominate the big and small screen, and tell others to suck it! The next decade belongs to the fans.

In summary, I will go as far as saying, I love the ARROW Pilot slightly more than Revolution. I am glad ARROW happens. I love it already! It's a winner!

Here is the promo for next week's episode 1.02 Honor Thy Father.

Supernatural - Dealing with the Stripped-Down Reality & Up-coming Episode Synopsis [Contains Spoilers]

Photo taken and tweeted by @guynormanbee
After what's been a fantastic season of Supernatural, we're on the homestretch. Season seven has been heavily focusing on the Winchesters surviving on a stripped-down reality, not only they lost two of the most loved and trusted friends, Bobby and Castiel, the Winchesters also have to deal with the Leviathans who are running wild like real life politicians.

I recall Jensen's comment in an interview he did earlier, which really sums up season seven perfectly.
"Season seven is Supernatural stripped down. It's the acoustic [version]!...They've taken a lot of the tools of our trade that we've come to rely on over the years, and they've kind of stripped those away from us, so we're kind of having to get back to the basics. We're relying on each other; we're relying on our smarts, our wits just to make it through, and it's cool. I like it. It's definitely reminiscent of the first season, which was when we fell in love with the show and a lot of the people watching fell in love with it." -- Jensen Ackles, Examiner.com, Los Angeles TV Insider
I personally find it hard to come up with any theories for this season. I usually have a theory or two but I got nothing this time. It's not a bad thing, afterall, it hurt my brain to think about stuff like "what happened to Samuel Colt after he disappeared?" The show has gone back to basic with the good old fashion "saving people hunting things family business". But the show is much more mature now in comparison to earlier seasons. We are seeing more emotional struggles of the main characters in dealing with self-doubt, losses, trust and belief. Stuff like this only happens when you get older, so this approach is only fitting as the show matures. This is one of the things I admire the show the most, it evolves on so many different levels, there is just so much to learn from the story, the production and the writers.
While we wait for the all new Supernatural episode which airs on April 20, here are the up-coming synopsis to keep us sane or insane..

7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo

FELICIA DAY (THE GUILD, EUREKA) GUEST STARS — Dick Roman (James Patrick Stuart) acquires Frank’s hard drive that contains sensitive information about the Winchesters and gives it to an unsuspecting brilliant hacker named Charlie (guest star Day) telling her she has 48 hours to crack the firewall or she is fired. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are tipped off that Dick has the hard drive and race to get to Charlie before she breaks the code. Meanwhile, Bobby (Jim Beaver) tries to help the brothers, but his rage towards Dick for killing him starts to get in the way. John MacCarthy directed the episode written by Robbie Thompson. Source KSiteTV

7.21 Reading Is Fundamental

Ben Edlund is the writer and director of this episode. Spoiler..brace yourself for the Asian prophet -- Mike Chang (No, not really, you wish!)

7.22 There Will Be Blood

Director Guy Bee tweeted a set photo. Oh BABY!!

7.23 Survival of the Fittest

The episode title for 7.23 keeps changing, watch this space I guess. But one thing for sure, Robert Singer is the director and I believe Sera penned this episode.

We still don't have any news for season eight.. Watch this space! Is it just me or do you also want Carver Edlund to collaborate on an episode in season eight?

The Year That Was 2011

As the files are being backed up to the Time Machine, I would like to take this opportunity to look back on a year of memorable moments that were blog-worthy for The Impala's Trunk, as well as to set sights on the horizon.

January 2011

The best New Years gift for Supernatural fans in Australia was announcement of the return of series (Smallville along with it) on the new digital channel, Eleven. Every man and his dog knew about the lack of support and promotion from the local TV network in Australia, and both shows were off air for awhile. You can't blame us for watching the shows we love so much via other channels. TV networks should distribute shows where fans choose watch it and when to watch it, right? Since the return of both shows, Eleven had been very supportive and committed, and fans are never shy in letting them know we appreciate them via Twitter.

PS: As I was composing this blog post, I saw an ad on Eleven promoting the return of Supernatural for January 9, 2012. Woot! Woot!

In January, I was also getting extremely excited about Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural Convention in LA (also known as LACon) in February. Tinny and I were organising the final details for our trip. We were getting so close, I could smell Misha's cologne and I couldn't get the 'OMG-I-am-going-to-hug-Jensen-Ackles' smile off my face.

February 2011

This was the BEST month of my tiny little life. I was off to LA and New York. I was off to see Jensen & co, in LA! I haven't been able to shut up about it -- I touched Jensen Ackles!!

February 12-14 was the BEST weekend of my life. The experience was unbelievable, not only the cast was awesome, the organisers and the fans were a fantastic group of people. I also had the opportunity to meet new friends, who are some of the nicest people I've known in my life. Thank you once again for making my life brighter. I felt like my life was not the same ever since I came back, it was liberating! I embraced a new perspective and I intent to live a life that is fun and productive. Easy say than done.. I'm working on it!

My iPhone was Jensenated -- it was signed by Jensen, he laughed when I gave him my iPhone. My iPhone 3G has been officially inducted to the Tiny Hall of Fame. Thanks to Tinny for being so supportive and resourceful in finding the right box for it. By the way, it was also her idea to get the iPhone signed by Jensen.

The stage banner was the biggest pain in the ass, but in a good way. (Oh wait...that didn't come out right!) The banner was signed by all guests. That's 100 kinds of awesomes. I just need to find a place to hang it.

February 1 also marked the 2nd anniversary of The Impala's Trunk. As the 3rd anniversary approaching, perhaps I can bake a cake to celebrate.

March 2011

'Jensen Ackles' was the number one trending topic on Twitter on March 1 for a few good hours. It was his birthday in case you didn't realise. I remember I was about to go to bed and then it just happened. Supernatural fans are the best, if you don't know that already.

On the technology front, the iPad 2 was launched. I swear I couldn't wait to buy an iPad back in November 2010, I needed it for work and I needed it for the US trip. It was definitely one of the best purchases. Looks like my next iPad will be iPad 3 or 4. I still love my iPad 1 though.. It must be Jensenated before it retires.

April 2011

April is usually one of the most stressful months in my life, but no matter.. good things do happen. Supernatural season seven was given the green light in April. Not that we weren't expecting it to happen. In April, Supernatural, Jensen and Misha were named TV Guide Fan Favourites in the Sci-Fi Show, Actor, Non-Human categories respectively. Sorry Jared, you shall win Fan Favourite Hair next time.

In April, Smallville's Tom Welling and Erica Durance were on the cover of TV Guide. It was a perfect send-off for the show… I was totally ready to see the finale, in a good way of course. Who wouldn't want to see Clark finally take flight in man-in-tights...right?

As for the theatre, Thor took me by surprise in every sense of the word. It was probably one of the most enjoyable films in 2011. I hope Thor II will be as good!

May 2011

May 23 marked one year of anniversary of the Lost series finale and May 24 for the 24 series finale. Since both shows ended, I have been hoping to find some new shows to follow. With Smallville on its way out, I seriously need to find more shows to watch and to blog about.

After ten epic seasons of a show about the boy who was destined to be Superman, Smallville finally drew its curtains. The series finale was one of the best I've seen on TV. It was the perfect way to end the series. Fans should be happy to see such epic ending, I certainly was.

A few years ago, when I first started watching Smallville, I didn't think I'd like it at all, I didn't think I'd become a fan, I certainly didn't think I'd be so emotionally attached to it. It was such a great show. Tom Welling and Erica Durance are the Superman and Lois Lane of this generation.

My thoughts on the series finale and in general can be found here.

June 2011

June was relatively quiet. My sister and I went to Supernova, the pop culture convention in Sydney, it was not a total waste of time. My sister hasn't been to one of these before, so to help her avoiding a 'pop-cultural shock', I told her not to stare at people and freak or laugh. This event gives fans the opportunity to come out once a year to go nuts and be their own version of Spiderman, Superman, Batman, IronMan and Sailor Moon! Let them!

After Supernova, I realised I've seen seven Joss Whedon cast members in real life (including Joss himself) without even try. I am a nerd…without knowing it.

In June, fans welcome Jared (@jarpad) to Twitter. Finally! I think it's a good think and we know this was legit because he did during Nashcon. There are SO many fakers and haters out there. It's good to see Jared put his own stamp on his tweeting. He is awesome!

PS, Jensen is NOT on Twitter nor Facebook. Don't be fooled by those who claim they are Jensen.

JK Rowling also announced Pottermore, an online permanent home for all the Harry Potter contents including ebooks, audiobooks, and a lot of interactive goodies for fans.

July 2011

A lot happened in July, but noticeably the cast and producers of Supernatural were given an epic welcome to Hall H of ComicCon. Hall H was the biggest room at the San Diego Convention Centre, it has the capacity of up to 6,500 seats.

Jensen and Jared are now very confident on a live stage in front of thousands of screaming fans, they were a bit shy and not too lively in their first appearance on a stage like this a few years ago. If you've been to a Supernatural con, you'd experience the chemistry and energy, it's priceless. I got the same vibe from watching the clips from ComicCon. Like other panels could get a bit awkward, simply because the actors weren't expecting the scale and the madness from fans, but Supernatural and SG1 were probably one of the best and most fun.

2011 was also the year I declare my love for Ben Edlund and Jeremy Carver -- two of my favourite TV writers. Just throwing it out there again. They are my heroes. They inspire me to think and write creatively. Jeremy Carver was also the reason I got into Being Human (US). Being one of those who haven't seen the original UK version, I am really enjoying the show. I think he and Anna Fricke are doing a great job as the show runners and writers.

Speaking of my favourite writers, Eric Kripke was reported to be working on a movie Haunted. I haven't had much luck in finding out more information on this. I hope this is a go! I am dying to see more stuff from him!

Three movies that left me a great impression were Thor, Captain America and Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallow II. Captain America premiered in July, this also was one of the best films in 2011. You know you can't shut me up, I still think Jensen Ackles should have been the Capt, Chris Evans was good, but Jensen was still the fan's choice. When I was watching the movie, I couldn't help thinking what would Jensen look like in those tights?

Fans also said good bye to Harry Potter in July. I haven't watched a movie where I cried from the beginning to the end. It was exhausting! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part II was no doubt the best Harry Potter film since The Goblet of Fire in my opinion. JK Rowling is certainly one of the best writers, and the Harry Potter series will remind as one of the best, if not the best, book series I've read.

August 2011

Let the ducks swamp the Supernatural productive office… I too contributed to the DuckNation initiative. It was probably one of the craziest things I've done -- hunting for rubber ducks and Legos! Seriously! But I had so much fun… and I still have plenty of leftover Legos.

There wasn't a year went by without a couple of epic Supernatural rewatches. In August, we had the longest Supernatural rewatch ever on Twitter. We watched a total of six episodes, they were hand-picked by Jensen as some of his favourites according to the Official Supernatural Magazine.

I've previously watched Wicked the Musical three times in Sydney and Melbourne, but this was the one time I was dying to watch the show. In August, I flew to Perth to watch Wicked for the 4th time. I was so looking forward to it, I knew all the lyrics of my favourite songs. Defying Gravity and For Good were the most anticipated songs. The show and cast did not disappoint. I swear when I go to New York in 2012, I'll watch it again on Broadway! Still wishing to see Idina Menzel on stage though.

September 2011

Supernatural season seven premiered in September with Meet the New Boss. Cas's fans were concerned about the fate of the character. No worries, SPOILER ALERT, he is due to return in 2012.

It was reported that JJ Abrams and Eric Kripke were working on a new TV pilot together for NBC -- Revolution. Man! I really want to see this already!

In September, I also encountered some technology set backs -- Virgin Mobile sucks. They couldn't accommodate the Lion upgrade and their call centre was impotent. It was an epic fail that they didn't act quickly to respond to change. So backward! I eventually decided to leave Virgin Mobile after four years as a customer.

October 2011

Steve Jobs passed away on October 6th 2011. I was at work, and someone popped up from his workstation and told us the news. We spent the next hour or so online reading about the life and death of the greatest innovator of our generation. The world was never the same because of his vision. Let's hope Apple will continue to drive innovation.

My new iPhone 4S arrived and I was as happy as the one who invented trousers. It was like the best thing ever! Since I skipped 2.5 generations, I find the 4S was so much faster! Tinny also got her first iPhone. I have now converted 80% of my friends and family to switch to iPhone. I am not an Apple Snob I swear!

In October, Jared and Gen announced that they were expecting their first baby. Gen is due in 2012. So, that means, no piggybacking Gen, Jarpad!

October was also my birthday month…

November 2011

After months of searching for new TV shows to watch, I finally found A Game of Thrones. Thank goodness for that! I was so into it, I downloaded and watched the whole thing in probably in 3 days. By the time I hit the season finale, I have already downloaded the books (all of them) to my iPad. Epic! I am currently reading A Clash of Kings.

November also brought us one of the best Supernatural episodes this season. It was very sad, and I haven't talked about it for awhile because it was that sad. Death's Door was a brilliant episode focusing on the life and death of Bobby Singer. I still hope that he is not dead, but I don't know.. the more I think about it, the more I don't know what to think about it. But I guess time will tell.

December 2011

It's Xmas month!! I waited the whole year for it! I have been busy researching and baking with new recipes for cakes and cookies, getting my hair done, shopping for Xmas presses. I was so ready to go home to spend Xmas with family.

I've been baking like crazy; eating and drinking like there is no tomorrow; reading until my eyes popped out; rewatching some of my favourite TV series as planned; catching up with family and friends… I love December!

To end a year of awesomeness, my mum is now an iPhone user.

Looking ahead to the next 12 months

I am really looking forward to the Year of the Dragon. This is the year to shine.

I am really looking forward to all new episodes of Supernatural, Dean and Sam's story aside, I really want to know what will happen to Bobby; how will Castiel come back; and how the Leviathans will be destroyed? I am praying that the show will get its eighth season. That way I know I can make it to another convention. I am selfish I know! Wait for me Jensen!!

Gen and Jared will be new a Mum and Dad. Who knows if Jensen and Danneel will give us some baby news? Personal stuff aside, what I really want to see if for the boys to get a movie deal within the next 12-24 months.

I am already planning to go to New York again. While Nashcon is not happening for me, because they changed dates (and the new dates do not fit into my diary, which is kind of depressing!) I really need another trip in the US. I would love this to be a writing trip.

The Avengers is the most anticipated movie in 2012 on my list. Joss Whedon is one of the most worshipped directors of our generations. He is a fan, he knows his fan and he is an awesome creator and writer. I have no doubt Joss Whedon's The Avengers will be awesome!

One of the things I wanted to do is to expand The Impala's Trunk to a new realm, while I am keeping all the existing awesomes, I am going to canvass new experiential ideas. Hopefully I can align some of these ideas to my life as a writer.

So that's pretty much the last post for 2011 from The Impala's Trunk. Thank you very much once again for visiting and sharing your thoughts. I look forward to more blogging and sharing. Don't forget, you can also follow me on Twitter.

To wrap up, I quote the Overload Misha Collins: "Here's to redefining normal and possible in 2012." Cheers Cheers!

My Favorite Female Heroes -- Lois Lane, Sarah Walker & Elphaba

Since the launch of the Impala’s Trunk, I rarely blog about female characters. Today I will share with you some of my favorite female heroes in popular culture.

There are a few others that made it to my honorable mention list – The X-Files’ Dana Scully, Joss Whedon's Buffy, Terminator’s Sarah Connor, Stargate SG1's Sam Carter, Iron Man/ Avengers' Black Widow, Jane Austin's Elizabeth Bennett (especially the Pride & Prejudice & Zombies version); Leon’s Mathilda and Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen. But at the time of writing, I wanted to single out three female heroes who I think are the role models to the female species. Here are they are:

Lois Lane (Smallville, played by Erica Durance)

It’s known – I love Lois Lane in Smallville. I’ve never watched Lois & Clark or read the comic books. I’ve never been a fan of the Superman movies. I’ve never been a fan of Superman until Smallville. You can read about my love for Smallville here and here.

I can’t compare the way any characters were written or portrayed previously but I just love Smallville, partly because of Erica Durance’s Lois Lane. I think Erica is an amazing actress, she makes Lois 'Lois'. Lois kicks ass (including Clark’s). Her loyalty and persistence are remarkable. Her one-liners are as awesome as Dean Winchester’s. She is a true individual, she is witty and funny. Lois is perfect for Clark, unlike Lana, Lois doesn’t harass him for information, she is an understanding partner. At times, she feels insecure, but who isn't? The way she supports Clark and her friends (even Cat Grant!) when it matters, we see her true color. She doesn’t need a label to make herself look important. She is confident, she is comfortable. To me, it’s almost like she has no darkness and hatred in her.

Smallville was a story about Clark Kent before he became Superman. What Smallville also did right was the writing/ development of other characters who grew up with Clark (before they became who they were in the Superman story). What I like about Smallville is Lois’s journey in becoming a stronger person. This strong person became someone Clark could trust and rely on. She wasn’t just doing this to feed her own ego or curiosity. She wasn’t doing this to look cool. She genuinely wanted to play a role in the world saving crusade. Lois may not be a superhero with superpower, but she knew her role and she knew how to play it. She was the voice for the superheroes when they had none. She was their voice when they were misunderstood.

The chemistry between Lois and Clark in season eight to ten was particularly strong. It was refreshing because the Lana angst was gone, it was just dragging on and on and Lana, to me, had a weak mind – like the force wasn’t with her, if that makes sense?! I love the way Lois discovered Clark as the Blur and embraced his Kryptonian heritage. I love that she had a bit of fun with it too. That’s so Lois! I think because there was no darkness and confusion in her heart, her mind was clearer than Clark, and she could help him when others couldn’t. It took a strong person with a good heart to help Superman to fulfill his destiny.

And Lois has an awesome down-to-earth wardrobe and hair. I wants them precious!

Sarah Walker (Chuck, played by Yvonne Strahovski)

What I love about Sarah is that she is as strong as Lara Croft, as sexy as Lara Croft, but Sarah is likeable. I'm not saying I don't like Lara Croft, but quite frankly I don't really care about Lara Croft but Sarah is a very likeable character. She is one of the best spies, she is more than fighting and killing bad guys. She is confident, sexy and smart. She is everything Chuck wants.

Like Erica Durance’s Lois Lane, Yvonne Strahovski makes Sarah Walker awesome. She was a little known when she started playing the role (and I bet 80% of Australia don’t know about the awesome Yvonne!) But she is an amazing actress. She owns the role as Sarah Walker.

After watching Sarah’s backstory in Chuck vs. The Cougar, Sarah clearly became one of my favorite characters. Her past was such an interesting story! She was a misfit. She didn't fit in at school (and I don’t think she cared about fitting in), she was laughed at, she was bullied. She grew up with a con man father. She didn't have a normal childhood or a normal life, she didn't have any friends.

What I love about Sarah the most is that she does not like cliché. She actually struggles with the idea of normality and she has to work with Chuck on this. I think Chuck causes disruption, but it isn’t necessary a bad thing. Throughout the series, Sarah was becoming less Terminator. She has to adjust this love thing and to figure out where Chuck fits in. She could’ve been a Carina or General Beckman or Frost. But she is Sarah because of the life choices she made.

It takes a strong-minded person to make good choices in life. I don’t think adjusting her toughness and her spy life are necessary a sign of weakness. I think because her love is strong for Chuck, a new balance is for her to find.

Elphaba (Wicked, played by Idina Menzel)

It took me four shows to truly appreciate Elphaba. I think she is one of the best original female characters ever created. She had always been different in her appearance and her forward-thinking. When others were too weak to speak up and too afraid to help those in needs, she came through as a hero and defied gravity.

What I love about her character and her story is that, it wasn’t about accepting limits, it wasn’t about playing by the rules of someone else’s game. She believed everyone deserved the chance to fly. She may be flying solo but she was flying free. She couldn’t care about what others would say about her in generations to come. She was one of those people who would say, “Screw you, that’s just who I am. In fact, you go tell others how awesome I am!”

For those who were too weak to dream and too afraid to fulfill their own destiny, they could say a thing or two about the greatest witch or tell a story about how Elphaba flew away (the flying was epic by the way). For those who were strong enough, they became heroes and legends. Elphaba truly defied gravity in every sense of the word.

What I love about these stories is that they highlight the fact that these characters don’t have to fit in, they can create a league of their own, they can be heroes, they can be legends. We are always pressured to be normal and to play safe; to do what others do; to be like other; to think like others; to talk like others. I think there is a thing or two to learn from these female heroes. It's a necessity to have these strong female heroes in popular culture. Let's see more in real life.

Who are your favorite female heroes?

Dean & Sam Go MAD

I once said, I'd love to see Dean and Sam to appear on The Simpsons or South Park, but I'll take this one! Supernatural appeared on Cartoon Network's MAD yesterday. Details here. I imagine you should be able to watch the entire parody on YouTube very soon. For now, here is the preview:

LOL.. I love the details they have on Dean.. Woot Woot! Show us his muscles!! As for Sam, nice work on his sides and the puppy-eyes!

And in case you missed the Smallville parody, here it is again.. Lois and Chloe look so much like Erica and Alison!

A Tribute to Smallville Part II -- My Thoughts on the Series Finale

Last Saturday (Friday in the US), I was trying to keep myself busy before watching the series finale of Smallville with my friends. It was hard! I was on lockdown, I restricted myself from getting on Twitter or the internet to avoid any fan comments and spoilers. It was painful! But I did it. When I finally watched the finale, I was expecting to lose myself with tears, but instead I had this smile on my face the whole time. I was really happy to see what I saw. You don't need a recap from me, so here are a few thoughts on the Smallville finale.

As I mentioned previously, I'd be happy to see just a glimpse of the tights and flights. I was expecting just one shot, similar to the very last shot of the finale when Clark was on the roof of the Daily Planet. I thought if I could see just that shot, I'd be happy. But I got a lot more than that. The last 18 minutes of the finale was the most watched 18 minutes of Smallville in my experience.
"Your final trial is upon you my son. You are ready, seize your destiny." Jor-El, Smallville Finale, 2011
I just love how Brian Peterson and Kelly Sounders wrapped up the show in such fashion. This is the perfect way to go out for a show that deserves a good ending. The music was epic; Tom was calm; Erica was amazing and the overall dialogues and interaction between characters were very very well done. The key scenes were very memorable -- the return of Lex; Tess and Lex; Lex and Clark; Papa & Mama Kent and Clark; and Lois and Clark. I was relieved to see Chloe at the beginning of the finale for some reason, at least I know she didn't die, right? I have always been a fan of Tess, purely because I am impressed with Cassidy Freeman's acting ability. Tess died. Ouch. I like the way the writers wrapped up Tess. Redemption, my friend, redemption!
"We have been down our long road, Kal-El -- one paved with difficult trials. Those trials are behind you now. Any father can only hope that he is one day humbled by the feats of his son. But it is your soul, Kal-El, of which I am most proud. You -- and you alone -- possess the courage, the determination and the compassion that will be required of you to lift the darkness from the Earth. I ask you to remember one thing. Your abilities may be of my blood but it is your time in Smallville, with Jonathan and Martha Kent and all the people there, that made you a hero." Jor-El, Smallville, 2011
Jor-El's words reminded me what I have been watching. The show has evolved over the years but the mytho got stronger and stronger. Smallville was about Clark Kent's journey in becoming Superman. It's not easy to be a superhero. You have God-like power, you could be either the world's greatest hero or villain. Evan a superhero has to work hard to earn respects and to master his own superpowers. Superman has high morals, he learnt that from having good earth parents and under the guidance of Jor-El. If only he was raised by Lionel Luther, which we have seen a few times in season ten, then he would become the earth's worst enemy.

The trials, as seen in the 18th minute of the finale, were excellent reminders of Clark's journey. A superhero wasn't made in a day. To me, it's more than the tights and flights. One theme I enjoyed the most was the journey of Clark discovering his power -- the heat vision, x-ray vision, super hearing, super breath and ultimately flying. But the friendship theme was something I really enjoyed too. It was also such a big thing to see how much Clark cared about his friends and how much they meant to him. He never gave up on Oliver. I don't necessary like to see the dark and depressed Oliver, I'd much prefer to see him as Green Arrow. I love how Clark forgave Tess. I love how Clark told Lex "Sorry I couldn't save you." It wasn't just the saving people from falling from the building or the fire, but it's about saving people from their own darkness.
"When he decides to take to the skies, he is going to need you to ground him." Chloe Sullivan, Smallville Finale, 2011
It's a superhero years in the making and we have been with him the whole time (ok, not me but still!). Like it or not, Tom Welling is the Superman of this generation. I wouldn't give Dean Cain the same statue. Tom was so awesome in the finale. Words cannot express how much I love him (and Erica Durance) in the finale. Erica was amazing. I love her! Because of her, I finally accepted her character. Erica's Lois is such a great role model. She truly is the best Lois Lane ever! Her performance was just awesome. Tom's Clark was calm, confident and mature. Clark finally let go of every doubt and insecurity, he took the first flight to become the hero he was destined to be. Clark cannot be the beacon of hope if he has darkness in his heart. Every expression, words and action from Tom was telling us that. It was convincing. It was good story telling.
"…. They may not be perfect, but I believe even in the darkest soul, there's always hope. People want to believe in something greater. It may be easier to hate, but it's stronger to love." Clark Kent, Smallville Finale, 2011
That made Jor-El so proud. That's why he deserves the ultimate superpower. That's why he is Superman. Anyone can put on the cape and dress like a superhero, but it's the big heart and good morals that make a superhero. That's the most important thing, that's the whole point, that's why he is so super, that's why Tom Welling is the Superman of our generation.

Always hold onto Smallville

Coming soon, the finale instalment: 'A Tribute to Smallville Part III' -- My favourite episodes; strong female characters; and more.

A Tribute to Smallville Part I -- The Path of Becoming a Fan

Back in June last year (2010), I wrote a blog post titled 'My Constant'. Part of me was sad because two of my favorite shows -- Lost and 24 -- bowed out in the same month. The worst thing was, the other part of me wasn't feeling any better! I have to brace for another double-lost in 12 month's time. Supernatural had just been renewed for season six but I wasn't sure if it would go beyond that. And Smallville was always going to end with its tenth season. The next 12 month wasn't going to be easy.

One year later… (today)

The good news is, my favorite show Supernatural has just been renewed for its seventh season a few weeks ago. But the sad news remains, Smallville will come to the end in 2 days. This time next week, there will be no more 'all new episode of Smallville on the CW'. Friday next week, there will be no more 'somebody save me'. A few weeks after the series finale, some fans will move on, some fans such as myself, may revisit the entire season one more time. For those who don't care, will still not care.
"A light in the darkness. A symbol for us to believe in when all other hope is lost. I've looked into the Blur's heart and I can tell you that his intentions are good. Let the Blur be the hero he needs to be." Lois Lane, Ep 9.08 Idol
I started watching Smallville about three years ago. My friend has been the biggest fanboy of the show. I didn't get it. It looked too 90210 to me. I was never a fan of the Superman movies or anything related to Superman. I don't read comic books, I certainly don't know anything about .. well.. anything. My friend always asked me to give Smallville a try. I did. But every time I watched it on TV, Lana was always in the hospital. I thought the episode must be a repeat! I didn't care. I thought to myself, what's the point of it if we never get to see Clark fly?'

I had no interest on watching the show if watching Lana in the hospital was all I would get. That was when Jensen Ackles came into the picture. I started watching Supernatural at the end of its second season. I started to watch some of Jensen's earlier works including Dark Angel but I was still not convinced about Smallville . During one summer hellatus, I was really bored and I needed to find something to watch. I thought perhaps I should just watch season four to see Jensen played Jason Teague in Smallville . But I knew if I only bought season four, I would so fast-forward the whole show and watch Jensen's scenes only. I thought and thought hard. I finally made a decision to watch Smallville from the beginning. If it sucked, I'd only wasted four sets of DVDs (it was on sales) and I didn't have to care so much after four seasons. So I went out and bought the first four seasons only.

My first impression of season one of Smallville was meh, it had some good episodes and bad episodes. But the last episode of season one saved it and I couldn't wait to start season two. And so, that was pretty much the pattern from then on. There were always some good ones and bad ones in every season. But something else was pulling me in. When I got to season four, I knew I was paying extra attention to Jensen as Jason Teague, but surprisingly I was getting into the story of Clark Kent; the father and son relationship between Lionel and Lex; and the friendship between Clark and Lex. The appearance of Christopher Reeve was pretty epic despite the fact that I wasn't a fan of Superman at all.

By the time Lionel went oracle in season five, I was liking Smallville a lot more. I can't explain it, but I started to really enjoy that storyarc. By season seven, I was totally convinced about the show, because it was supposedly Lana's last season. I caught up with all episodes by the time season eight commenced. So yes, I pretty much watched season one to seven in one go on DVDs.

The first few seasons were a bit cheesy but there were some good episodes there. To me, the turning point was when they graduated from Smallville High. The high school vibe kind of bothered me in a way, again, it was a bit too 90201 to me. It wasn't the worst thing ever, but once the Dairy Planet was introduced, it felt right to me. I know Smallville is supposed to be about the young Clark before he became Superman, but I was into the story a lot more after the high school days. I am not missing the Smallville High.

Without a doubt, Lois is my favorite character. I love her from 4.01 Crusade. I love season eight to ten so much because she was in more episodes. I don't hate Lana, but I think her character was a bit out of date, although I did enjoy watching the dark Lana. I think Lois (kudos to Erica Durance) was much more interesting and enjoyable to watch. And Erica is a fantastic actress who nailed her performance every time. She became one of my favorite actresses after I watched 8.10 Bride. I remembered I was on the road at the time and I had to watch the episode on a crappy laptop with crappy internet connection in the countryside. I saw the scene where Lois talked to Oliver about Clark, I was like 'this girl can act.' I can probably write another post only on Lois a bit later on.

I love Lionel Luthor. I mean, John Glover is a brilliant actor. I was really into his performance. He was so bad-ass and I just love watching his performance. I love the chemistry between him and Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor. I don't know this guy at all, but I thought he was really good as Lex. In the beginning, I always wondered why Lex was like a relationship counsellor to Clark and Lana, that was funny to me. I didn't know Clark and Lex were friends when they were younger, so that was fun to watch.

Chloe is an awesome character. I didn't really like her in season one and two, I thought she was too in-your-face. But I love her after she discovered Clark's secret. Her character has grown soooo much, more so that Clark I think. But I think she grew up too fast, by the time she worked at Daily Planet, she was a woman. I admire her for keeping Clark's secret, which wasn't always easy and at times she was so close of getting killed. I love it when she became WatchTower. I had the chill down my spine when she put Dr Fate's helmet on.

What's my thought on Oliver Queen? I like Oliver. But I'd much prefer seeing Green Arrow. I wasn't sure if I like Oliver being dark and depressed. That was when I missed seeing Green Arrow. I love his first appearance as Green Arrow in Arrow. In fact, that leads to my next 'love'. I love the guest appearance of other superheroes. Justice was close to being one my favorite episodes in the series. But I love Absolute Justice more. Being the first 'Smallville movie', it was epic. I love it! I was really impressed with the story and the writing. Kudos to Geoff Johns.

It's been an emotional season ten for long time fans. I happen to know a few people who have been watching the show since the Pilot. For those who used to watch Smallville but don't watch it any more for whatever reasons, you should watch the series finale, you will be amazed how much the show has grown, how much Welling and cast have grown. For a fan like me, who have only started watching the show three years ago, it's still very sad to see a good show goes. I don't regret not watching it sooner, but I have grown to love Smallville (Supernatural still holds the top spot).

I am really excited about the series finale. I am sure I will cry. I can feel it. It's gonna be embarrassing. But I will cry! The flights and tights are given, even just for a few seconds. If I get more, it'll be a bonus. But I'd be happy to see just a glimpse of it. I want to see Clark to totally let go of his insecurity and be totally confident and be the hero he is meant to be.

I have high expectation in the series finale. I really want this to be epic. After all, it is the only long-running TV series based on a DC comic. It did extremely well in keeping the mytho going. I am sure the new Superman movie will ruin everything (I am cynical). The path of becoming a hero is not an easy one. To me, Smallville is better than any Superman movies. It's one of those things, you can't jam everything into a couple of 2-hour movies. Dumb it down for me. Story like this needs to be explored properly and extensively and you have to do it right. And I think Smallville did it right. It's a story about Clark Kent. What makes Superman interesting is Clark Kent. What complete Clark Kent are his earth parents, his friends and Lois. What makes Clark Kent awesome is Tom Welling.

I know Clark Kent will ultimately become Superman, but I am on lockdown. I am not reading any spoilers or photos etc.

Don't miss the epic series finale of Smallville on Friday 13th May on the CW. Watch it live. Watch it online. Download it on iTune. Anyway you can!

Smallville Series Finale - Trailer

I am going to cry... I know I am going to cry when I see the series finale of Smallville. Although I only became a fan of Smallville 3 years ago, and I can imagine how emotional this will be for fans who have been fans of Superman and Smallville longer than me, but I am already feeling the emotions.

I am so going to cry...

May 20, 2011.. Don't go anywhere! Watch the 2-hour series finale.

(My Version of) Sunday Roasts - Smallville; Supernatural; JIBCon

I had a big week last week, it was exhausting! There are a few things I would like to share with you.. so here is my version of Sunday roast. Gotta love it when I put Smallville and Supernatural together!

I cannot begin to tell you how sad I will be in coming weeks. The final countdown begins! We are talking about hours to the series finale of Smallville. It's only fitting to feature Tom Welling and Erica Durance in this week's TVGuide. I love them! I am so excited to see Tom and Erica on the cover of the TVGuide. That's two of favorite shows on TVGuide this year!! Woohoo!!!!!

I have never been a Superman fan before, but Smallville has changed that and it has become one of my all time favorite TV shows, I guess the journey of a hero becoming a hero is always more interesting and I think Smallville has done brilliantly in that regard. There is no doubt in my mind Tom Welling is our generation of Superman and Erica Durance is our generation of Lois Lane. I am not excited about the up-coming Superman movie, nor care about the rumor of the Justice League movie.

I was watching the Pilot yesterday. It was indeed a very good Pilot. I only started watching Smallville about 3 years ago. I respect how far the show has come and how excited fans are when they see certain characters, plots or scenes. I was also watching Superman Returns the other night. Sorry, but Erica is a much better Lois Lane. She re-defined Lois Lane. The new Lois Lane has big shoes to fill.

The finale will also feature a John Williams score The Planet Krypton (as featured in the original 1978 Superman movie). EPIC!! Source: EW

I know Clark will become Superman, but still, I am on lockdown and I don't want to read any spoilers! The two-hour series finale of Smallville hits the screen on May 13.

The means Supernatural will have a break, their season finale will be on May 20 with two episodes (6.21 & 6.22). It won't be a 2-hour movie length episode, although the idea did come across the minds of Kripke and Gamble. This leads to my next topic, Supernatural. I totally planned this.

The Supernatural Rome Con, Jus in Bello (JIBCon), is happening right now in Rome. My timeline is exploded with awesome JIBCon tweets. Holy Smoke!!!!! Literally! The boys are HOT! Why couldn't Jensen wear single layer in LACon?!

There are two photo sources you need to bookmark for life! FiercelyNormal & THIS (I don't know who did this one, but you are awesome). SuperWiki has a collection of reports, photos, videos and tweets. Read all about Jensen's Bartholomew and Jared's Francesco!! They are adorable!

I know we are getting Celine Dion next week, but I am really excited about Back to the Future III!!!! I am talking Supernatural of course!! Not long to go, Supernatural returns this Friday on the CW. I love Guy Bee and I'd give him the world.... of random mock-up posters. Stay tuned, I've done something silly again.

Hey McFly.. I mean.. Winchester!

It's not every season you get to see a massive cast and crew photo like this one.. I am framing it! Source: Misha Collins

Erica Durance - TV Guide Photoshoot & WB Interview

Cannot wait for this issue of TV Guide!!!!! I love Erica! She is so cool!!

Smallville is featured on the April 7 issue of TV Guide. Don't miss it!! I think Tom Welling is in it as well.. I mean, the guy is SUPERMAN!! Suck it up and deal with it! Tom is our generation of Superman!

Erica also did an interview awhile ago for WB. They spent a lot of time fixing her hair and I don't see the different! LOL. This interview makes me want to watch her first Smallville episode back in season 4. I love Erica's Lois on Smallville, I have never been a Superman fan, but I am completely sold to Smallville. I want to be Lois when I grow up.

How many hours to go until the end of Smallville? Too sad, don't remind me!

08 February 2011

Smallville gets a 2-hour series finale; Supernatural also gets a 2-hour season finale

Today is full of awesomeness!!!

The series finale of Smallville will get a 2-hour special! The last time we got a 2-hour special was back in season 9 with Absolute Justice. This is so sad as this is the last 2 hours of Smallville. I am so happy that my friend introduced me to this show 2 years ago. And I've loved it ever since! The series finale will air on May 13.

As for Supernatural, the season finale won't air on the same night as Smallville. But we will get a 2-hour finale a week after (May 20). Visit IGN for details. There is no official words regarding the renewal of season 7. I guess we will know very soon!

Bigger badder more beautiful - Let the wild ride to Supernatural land begin

The CW has released a new promo to get us ready for the return of Supernatural on Friday 28 January.

6.12 DEATH RETURNS FOR A MEETING WITH DEAN — Dean and Bobby anxiously wait for Sam to wake up to see if Death (guest star Julian Richings) was able to restore his soul without causing Sam to lose his mind. Meanwhile, Dean and Bobby investigate a disappearance of virgins and discover dragons are behind the kidnappings. ........ Episode directed by Phil Sgriccia and written by Adam Glass. Full synopsis can be read on DreadCentral.

Smallville also returns on the same night with 10.12 Collateral. I am seeing heaps of exciting stuff from SpoilerTV on upcoming episodes. I can't wait to see the return of Chloe, Mama Kent and Lionel Luthor! No sign of Rosenbaum returning as Lex, you know why? Coz he has hair now.

One more thing, I have finished 1-3 seasons of Chuck and got the whole family watching it. I have only watched the first 2 episodes of season 4. I'll get around to it. Long live the nerd herd.

[SPN & SMV Spoilers] Ohhh... Some like it Gen, Some like it Superman

Ok so, you have probably have heard.. and this is not a joke. I repeat this is not a joke. In an up-coming episode of Supernatural, Dean and Sam will be transported to an alternate reality, they become Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. HA! And it gets crazier, Genevieve Cortese will play Jared's (I mean Sam's) wife.. Getting the Changing Channels and WIAWSNB vibe? WTF!! But I think this is going to be funny! Source: SpoilerTV

"It's crazy, right?! RIGHT?!"

On another note, Jim Beaver will be on 4 Supernatural episodes in a row... Can't get enough of Uncle Bobby!!!

I am screaming like a 10 year old fan girl. Look! Look at the reflection of Clark on the House of El - it is SUPERMAN!!! Will we or will we not see Tom Welling in his Superman suit? OMFG!!!!! I cannot wait.

Like it or not, Tom Welling is the Superman of our generation. Sorry Brandon Routh.
Superman Returns just doesn't work for me and doesn't work at all.

[Update] Feel the love again... Supernatural, Smallville and more returning to Australia on 11th Jan 2011

As mentioned earlier, Aussie fans are feeling the love again. Channel Ten is launching the new digital channel, Eleven, on Tuesday 11 January, 2011.

Eleven will air Supernatural season 5. From what I can see on the TV spot, Smallville will resume from season 8. I can only assume SGU will either start from the beginning or from where it was left off, which was like 4 or 5 episodes in. I can't locate any program schedule yet, but you'll know when we all know!

Any promo from Eleven is better than no promo. It's pretty ok but if you haven't seen Supernatural season 6, the trailer is pretty spoilery.

Here is an old promo Jensen and Jared did for Channel Ten a few years ago, probably in its first or second year on Channel Ten.

I'll be watching to support the shows!

Here is the loop on Eleven with various shows:
