Thank You 2012, I Was Entertained This Year

If you are reading this feature, it means the world didn't end on the 21st December and I have recovered from the family Christmas madness. I know some of you are disappointed about the end of the world -- especially one super X-Files fan who believes in Chris Carter for the past 20 years. The truth is most of us are happier to see other people saving the world from the apocalypse or living in one or killing zombies on TV shows and movies. I don't know about you, but my entertainment is set for the next few years! The world is not perfect, but at least we are giving the opportunity to escape into another dimension the moment we turn on our entertainment devices.

An affogato isn't the same without ice cream. When it's Supernatural, if there is no angst no drama, it isn't fun. 

One of the biggest changes that we saw this year was the changing of the guard from previous showrunner Sera Gamble to Jeremy Carver. I was very sad and worried to see Sera go but the announcement of the return of Jeremy Carver at the same time was comforting. Apart from Ben Edlund, I cannot think of anyone else but Jeremy Carver to helm the show I love so much.

I am very happy with the direction of season eight. The core of the show still remains the same -- it is about the brothers saving people hunting things, the family business! But Jeremy and the writing team are putting details under the microscope. We are digging deeper into details within details, just like when we write academic papers -- we dig, we research, we focus on different aspects, but the paper is still the same subject matter. On Supernatural, we are seeing our heroes -- Dean, Sam and Castiel -- gaining different perspectives about each other, family, life, friendship, hunting and monsters. These new perspectives are hovering over the core theme of the show -- the brother relationship. 

Off the set, the cast has a very busy and fun year too -- Jensen's Angeles is like one of the best songs I've heard all year; Jared and Gen became first time parents; Misha, Vicky and West welcomed a new family to the family; Supernatural was in Hall H once again at Comic Con; and I am proud to be an attendee at one of the conventions this year in Chicago. The magnitude and charisma of Supernatural is unbelievable. As Eric Kripke said, Supernatural is like seeing his kids growing up and going to colleague. We are proud to be fans of Supernatural. 

In terms of other shows, I was really sad to see the end of Lost, 24 and Smallville. I asked myself: what am I going to watch and blog about now? I was desperately looking for good new shows to watch and I was concerned that I won't find any. But time has changed! We live in the beginning of the golden era of the genre shows!

We are seeing a wave of awesome genre shows in recent years and most of them are worthy to stick around -- Arrow, A Game of Thrones, Once Upon A Time, The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diary, Grimm, True Blood, Revolution, Dr Who, Falling Skies, Being Human and Warehouse 13. With S.H.I.E.L.D is in development, television is going to be better! And I hope we will see medical dramas and procedural cop shows to die down a little, because I think TV viewers have enough of them! They are all the friggin same! And if anyone is looking for a new reality show idea, STOP! JUST STOP! Unless it involves the Ghost Facers or Derren Brown, I don't want to know! 

Eric Kripke's new show, Revolution, is kicking ass! Comparing the show with Lost and Supernatural is not unheard of, but Revolution is the new Lost in terms of the scale and epicness. I told myself, this show cannot fail! Kripke's work deserves to be seen by more people and people need to know he is very good at what he does! Now we have to wait until March to see the second half of season one of Revolution.

Apart from Revolution, I most look forward to the return of A Game of Thrones. I love a HBO show and I hate a HBO show. The hiatus of A Game of Thrones is as long as a season of Supernatural being on air. How is that NOT insanity? I am currently reading A Dance With Dragons, I probably will revisit A Storm of Swords soon to get ready for season three of A Game of Thrones. The TV series is known that the TV series will not follow the book chapter by chapter, in fact I am a little disappointed how little Dany's prophecies were covered in season two, but it is still more than acceptable for television. A Game of Thrones is a great show! The book series is much bigger than Lord of the Rings. It is the most epic thing I've read. I hope season three will be really epic. Mr GRRM, please hurry up and finish writing The Wind of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

Once Upon A Time is becoming a favorite show of mine. I really look forward to the arrival of Hook and Cora, and how things will develop with Emma. I hope we get to see Baelfire. Please! Please let Nail be Baelfire! I am rewatching season one now, and I want to get up to speed so that I can blog about theories and my wishlist.

2012 has been a game-changing year for Joss Whedon and Marvel going forward. The battle between DC and Marvel intensifies in 2013 as Superman, Iron Man III and Thor 2, and more to follow in 2014 and 2015 with Captain America II, The Avengers II and (hopefully) Justice League. Marvel's phase II is in place, and DC is playing catch up. But this battle will set the trend and define the entertainment business for the next decade. It will also be the decade that belongs to the geeks!

But who will come out as the winner? Let's not kid ourselves, it is war! Fans love Whedon, it was the best decision from Marvel to involve him for The Avengers and other projects such as S.H.I.E.L.D. What would the complacent DC do to compete? We will compare them, we will criticize them, we will see Comic Con as the main PR battle ground for the studios. This is exciting for fans! I cannot wait to see Twilight to get out of the way (and I wish the 50 Shades movie will never see the living daylight). I want more superheroes movies.

What do you most look forward to in 2013 and beyond?

This Week In TV - Revolution; OUAT; Smash; The Walking Dead

It seems that I've watched a lot of TV this week (more like last week) and I am also doing a Supernatural season two and Lost (from the beginning) rewatch.

Revolution -- Nobody's Fault But Mine

This mid-season finale is really epic. You can go read Nicole's review on this for more details. Nobody's Fault But Mine is a great way to wrap up a few storylines. It has the Kripke trademark and I think his team is mastering the arts of story-telling. Most important, this tells me the series is well planned. To me, this mid-season finale is the end of one chapter. While there are heaps to reveal, others things that should be wrapped up were wrapped up. Everyone who should be rescued, got rescued -- Danny and Rachel. Nobody died and nobody got left behind. Charlie is growing up as a strong young woman and learning to stand up for her family. And she finally found Danny. Thank you! Rachel helped Bass to switch the power back on. To what extend? Time will tell. The helicopter scene at the end was like watching a 'supposedly not operational Death Star' functional. The show down between two best friends -- Bass and Miles were definitely the highlight of this episode and the first half the season. We still don't now what made the best buddies to turn against each other, but the guys were bitter and angry. Bass is playing sympathy for the devil, but I am sure there is more to his past. David Lyons definitely has one of the best man cries on television, like Matthew Fox on Lost or Jensen Ackles on Supernatural. Lyons' tears have so much anger, you cannot help to feel his pain when Miles told him he meant nothing to him, he was not family...Ouch! This mid-season finale did not disappoint. I really enjoyed it! Bring it Georgia Federation! Whatever you're gonna do!

Revolution is now on a super long hiatus! It returns on Monday, March 25, 2013.

Once Upon A Time -- The Crocodile and The Doctor

I know! I am a few episodes behind! There are so many shows to watch, some of them will have to wait until they get fast-tracked to Australia. Channel Seven is treating OUAT pretty good this season, we get two episodes per week -- Tuesday and Thursday. I watched The Crocodile and The Doctor, which were aired last week in Australia.

The Crocodile took us back to the weak and helpless Rumpelstiltskin in the past, which I love to watch! And I really love to see the contrast of a character's past and present all in one episode. My bro finds it confusing, but I survived Lost, so OUAT is a piece of cake! The contrast helps me to understand the story and the complicity of the character. I think this is a great way to tell a story. A show has got to give viewers layers, otherwise it will be as boring as James Bond.

I was really looking forward to see Killian Jones (aka Captain Hook). I have heard nothing but great things about him. What I love about OUAT is that you get to see the backstory and transformation of the iconic fairy tale characters. I particular enjoyed Pinocchio and Mad Hatter, who are two of my favorite characters and now Captain Hook is growing on me. 

The Dark One, Rumpelstiltskin, continues to be one of the best written and performed character on the show. Rumpelstiltskin is a very mysterious character, but now we know he and Captain Hook had a history, it makes it more interesting. Don't you love it when you see two villains face off against each other? It's not the traditional good versus evil show down. It's like watching Alien versus Predictor. One question remains, where the HELL is Baelfire?

The story of The Doctor focused on Victor Frankenstein -- he is obsessed with science, not magic. The Doctor was directed by Paul A Edwards, who also directed last week's Hunteri Heroici of Supernatural, I thought I mentioned that! What I love about this episode is the visual presentation of Dr Frankenstein's lab, this kind of black and white, almost metallic look was awesome! It kinda reminds me of Dr Horrible too! Did I see it coming -- Dr Whale being Dr Frankenstein? No. But now that I know he is Dr Frankenstein, it makes his Dr Whales more interesting, because to be honest, Dr Whales was as boring as my cupcakes! I love that he is in the story but he is probably the only one who believes in science more than magic. Where is the bride?

One more thing, I thought Regina's not-so-evil-self in Storybrooke is weird. She is somewhat powerless and her power is limited. What will happen when her mother arrive? Regina is our Evil Queen. Be evil! I do feel sorry for Regina, her backstory is really interesting. Every girl can cry for a guy, Regina is no exception.

As for Emma and Snow, I miss them! We don't see them on every episode and when we do, there ain't enough! Also does Emma still call Snow as Mary Margaret? Will we hear her saying 'Mum' soon? 

Season two of Once Upon A Time returns on January 6, 2013 on ABC.

Smash -- Boomshell

I should know by now what to expect when it comes to Smash. This show could have been a smash hit. I get the theater business drama, backstepping, the girl next-door blah blah, the music and the story, the material was good, but it wasn't as well written as I expected. It's like my banana cake, I know I miss a step, I know I forget to add oil. I know there is something wrong with it, but it still looks ok and tastes ok. Just ok.

But I keep coming back for more! I secretly hope Smash to be a great show. It is just not! While there are heaps of WTF moments, but I still watch it! I still compare it with Glee. Now that Glee is following Rachel and Kurt to New York, every fiber in my body tells me "this is how Smash should be". I know they are different shows and of course the writers have different way of exploring the uniqueness of the shows. Anyway... 

Boomshell is a better episode of Smash. It was a good season finale. Everything was wrapped up and Karen was the chosen one to play Marilyn. I don't really care about a lot of them including Dev and Ellis. Whatever. I've learnt how to accept Smash, just watch it and don't yell at it. Don't expect anything! I particular didn't like the montage of the musical Boomshell, and we only got one full song in the end. The look on the faces of Julia, Tom and Eileen look relieved rather than proud. May be they are proud. But I see that as a relief to see the show begins and ends with no major problem on stage and off stage. As an audience, I feel relief too. Thank GOD this season is over! We can now move on to Jennifer Hudson! I saw the promo for season two the other day. Promo is always good even for The CW's Beauty And The Beast, but I think and I hope Jennifer Hudson's voice will at least move me the way Rachel does for Glee.

Smash season two returns on February 12, 2013 on NBC. Not sure how many episodes it will get. I guess depends how good or bad it is. Season one didn't exactly live up to the expectation.  

The Walking Dead 

I've started watching The Walking Dead! Yay! The first episode really grabbed me! I love a good nonsense zombie drama. It's not just zombies eating people or people kissing zombies -- who does that except Robert Carlye, right? It's one of those shows I need a break from it every two to three episode because it's so depressing! And because of the hot and sticky condition, I don't recommend watching it during a very hot Aussie summer day (or night). The show is into its third season, I am very behind. No spoilers please. Just let me enjoy it! 

It certainly has the I Am Legend vibe. But like IAL, I don't find one-man-show boring, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is a very good actor, I've loved him since Love Actually! The story gets more interesting as more characters are introduced.

As 2013 approaches, apart from Supernatural and others, I am super excited about A Game of Thrones. I am half way through A Dance With Dragons, and I am starting to care about what Melisandra has to say. She is either very good at what she does or sucks at her craft. Either way, I think Jon Snow is the real deal in every sense of the word!

Comic Con -- an annual sleepover for fans?

As a fan, I have been following Comic Con for a few years now. Seeing all the live tweets, photos, reports and videos is like being there. And for some strange reasons, I find this year particular interesting and liberating. Seeing all the tweets regarding Hall H alone is quite an incredible experience. The concept of queuing up to see and meet their TV and movie heroes has a new meaning -- Comic Con is officially an annual sleepover for fans. Fans don't just watch television or movies, we LIVE and BREATHE pop culture. And this is why I think the queues and the sleepover are so epic because Comic Con fans are not just passive audience, they know their shit and they absolutely love love love their shows. This kind of spirit is being recognised and appreciated more and more.

So, on the news front. Nothing too life-changing and there hasn't been much OMFG spoilers in my opinions. A Game of Thrones' panel revealed 14 new characters for season three; Once Upon A Time has a few spoilers that we kinda expect; and Marvel has announced the release dates (and names) for Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World. And the Supernatural panel is due within the next few hours, so we will see what OMFG spoilers they will tell us.

This year has a party/ celebration feel to it. The party feel perhaps came from RDJ when he danced his way to the stage and his Iron Man hand.. The celebration feel came from the Firefly 10th Anniversary Reunion, which I think is the highlight of this year's Comic Con. It has been an emotional one and what a way to celebrate the show and the genius behind -- Joss Whedon. There is no better place than Comic Con to do this celebration! Joss always has a presence at Comic Con, but I think this year really feels like a bit of a celebration of a chapter of his life as a writer/ director. I think Firefly itself represents the spirit of Comic Con, it's an annual affair for die-hard fans and Joss' god-like status really connect with fans on so many levels. What's best? He respects his fans and that's why we love him so much!

And the media is getting more and more engaged with Comic Con with all the off-stage interviews, photos and tweets and parties. They've done a great job! I think the actors are very very involved too. Like Mark Sheppard has been coming to Comic Con for what...15, 16 years? And Zachary Levi and the Nerd Machine have organised off-site panels. Once a year, San Diego is turned into a pop culture's very own Las Vegas!

Enjoying A Song of Ice and Fire/ A Game of Thrones -- My reading and viewing experience

I began reading George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire last November and watching the HBO series A Game of Thrones at the same time. I forgot how exactly I got into the books and the TV series, probably the buzz on Twitter was good (and I trust my tweeps). And I couldn't resist the advertising on the ass of the bus. Damn you Sean Bean, who sat on the Iron Throne.

Why do I want to talk about my experience with A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones? Reading is always an interesting topic to me. Good thing I have a blog, which kind of works like as a journal. I found myself once again in a position where I was deciding whether I should watch the show first or read the book first. It happened to me before -- Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire; J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter; Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code; JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings which took me five years to pick it up and read it by the way. It happened to me every friggin time.

I know a lot of people prefer to read books and not watch the TV/movie adaptations; or the other way around; or to do both. I can't really pinpoint my position on books vs movies. With Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire, I was too chicken shit to watch the movie because I just wasn't sure if vampires were my kind of entertainment and Tom Cruise's vampire look was creepy. I figured text didn't scare me as much as visual no matter how descriptive it was. Harry Potter was different, because everyone was reading it, readers were just emotionally attached with the characters and story. Good story sells! And it was the first time I cried while reading a book. Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code has a really interesting story and it was probably the first time I got into a suspense thriller. And reading and finishing Lord of the Rings was an epic journey on its own. I just found it very hard to get into the language, and it was way too advance to me. But after watching the first movie which I loved, I took the opportunity to go back to the book, and I was immediately hooked. I finished all three books in one go over probably 4 to 5 weeks time. 

So, how does my usual pattern (if such thing exists) compare to my Game of Thrones/ A Song of Ice and Fire experience? I tossed and tossed for weeks. I had a handful of shows I'd like to start watching including Falling Skies, Once Upon a Time and The Walking Dead. They are all very different shows from A Game of Thrones which stood out because of the cast, I was doing a rewatch of Stargate Atlantis and I was just wondering how Jason Mamoa was doing after Conan and I actually didn't realise he was cast in GoT. I probably started watching some clips of the show and decided to watch the Pilot and see how I went.
BOOM! I finished GoT season one over a weekend.

I was just immediately hooked by the story and characters. But as ambitious as Game of Thrones/ A Song of Ice and Fire, multiple rewatches are required to catch every details. And then I realised watching is not enough AT ALL! I started my research on the books, there were a few good reviews on Amazon (you know who you are) about the books and what I should expect if I read it. So, I thought what the heck, I went ahead and downloaded the first book and then all of them... And now, I kind of don't want to start reading A Dance With Dragons, because who knows how long I need to wait for the next installment?! It could be another five years for all we know! And for pie sake, just tell me who Jon Snow's parents are.

Back to the reading of the books, it usually took me awhile to get into an author's writing style and the language of the book. The visual of the TV show really helps to get into the zone. I am glad I was watching A Game of Thrones and reading the book at the same time. It wasn't like I was comparing the book and the TV series, but what the TV series couldn't give me, I could easily pick up the details from the books. I am one of those readers/ viewers who would turn to internet for resources. If I want to know more about the ravens, for example, I jump online to search for more information to help me to go forward. If I care enough to Google it, it means I am already hooked.

A Song of Ice and Fire has more characters than people going to my Lebanese friends' wedding. It's not like I can't keep up or I get confused, as the structure wasn't written/ designed to confuse you. It's just that there are so many details and you just don't know when and where they will pop up and who will tell the story from their POV. The ways the POVs are organised was epic. For example, I think there is none better than Jamie Lannister to tell us about Areys Targaryen and the Sack of Kings Landing, because he was there and he was the Kingslayer. And we don't get to read Jamie's POV until book three and when I read his chapters, I just look at him differently. And this is something I don't feel yet from watching the TV show, partly because we are not there yet to see Jamie's complexity and bitterness. Or will we ever get to know Jamie better on the show?

I don't why I started with Jamie Lannister, but it was a good example I guess about being a POV character in the book. You see details not only about the character but also his world view. And the layers of details are not something you get to experience in the TV series. The TV series is good in a way that we can SEE it, their lives and stories are projected on the screen, hopefully the way readers see it when they read the book -- at least the landscape anyway. And I feel physically cold whenever I see the Wall on my TV. I am loving the visual, the design and the dialogues presented to me.

And back to the book, the first read is always in a linear fashion. But the second involves skipping certain chapters and to concentrate on things I care about the most and to catch details that I miss. GoT is one of those books, you catch something new everytime you read it. The third read is to read all POV chapters of a few characters -- Jon, Dany, Tyrion and Samwell. I'd read all Jon's chapters from book 1 to 4, and Dany's etc.. I love Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen the most. I think they are the ice and fire of the story. And I'll leave the theories to another day..but yeah, I am a big supporter of the theory about Jon Snow as a Targaryen. Dig that!

So, a lot of details on the TV show are different from the books. And that's when the fourth read comes in handy, just to make sure I am not confusing the books with the presentation of the TV show. The fourth read is a reminder about details. Changes are fine and I am ok with it. But the overall consistence with characters is worth a mention. Let's take a closer look at Dany and Jon.

Like Dany's prophecies and all that stuff happened in the House of the Undying in A Clash of Kings, were omitted in season two and I thought everything was building up to her visions in the House of the Undying in book two. When I watched the finale of season two of GoT, I was like..I swear her dragons weren't stolen and I was really hoping to see Rhaegar to appear in the House of the Undying. Despite this kind of differences, I still think Dany is one of the most consistent characters on the show based on her journey in the book. Both the TV show and the books are consistent to show her hero's journey.

Whereas with Jon Snow, his presence is so prominent in the books -- he is the bastard, he wears the black, he fights and protect and he is a leader -- Jon's story is a very good 'from boy-to-man' story. And I hope all things are leading to his real purpose, where his parentage will hopefully play a part. It's a popular fan theory that Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This is remained to be seen, but there are clues in the books just got your thinking about Jon's background and purpose. The whole Nights Watch arc is a stand-out story of its own -- you got the always mysterious Benjen Stark, Aemon Targaryen, the Others, zombies horse, Ghost, ravens, magical objects and books about dragons -- the Wall is the last line of defense for Westeros as we know it. The Wall itself is Hogwarts. The epicness of the Wall and Jon Snow are lacking a bit on the TV show. I feel they are the side story, and they are certainly not!

So, anyway. Here is my first dedicated blog post about A Song of Ice and Fire/ A Game of Thrones. I know there are heaps of reviews and theories out there by fans, so I am still finding an angle to focus on. But rest assure, this won't be the last one and my journey with GRRM and his epic tale has just begin.

Baby News, Congrats to Jarpad & Gen; Dean's New Jacket; Party On, Garth; The Avengers; Game of Thrones

First and foremost, congratulations to Jarpad and Gen on their new birth baby, Thomas Colton. Sleep, they must. Hope Gen is enjoying motherhood, and the family is doing well and getting rest.

Just Jared spotted Jared on set on Tuesday 27 March. 

There was also sighting of Jensen... It's about bloody time Dean chooses a new leather jacket. And we love it! A few of us talked about how hot his new jacket is -- from the style to its length; from his butt to his legs (again!)

I wonder what the guys at the back are thinking...

My review on Born Again Identity is being delay due to real life. Sorry about that, but I have started. Just need to finish it and I will!! Watch this space. There is something we look forward to... Party On, Garth!!




In other news.. The Avengers are being heavily promoted and it will only get bigger. I saw a really new pop-up board promo at a cinema in Sydney and I was in Hong Kong last week and there it was, I couldn't help it. Twilight, move over!

Before I forget, Game of Throne season two premieres April 1 on HBO. At least I've finished reading A Clash of Kings. There are definitely a few scenes I am so looking forward to see. And I love Dany and her dragons. BRING IT!

Interesting news is interesting

Who loves rumors? Me! But having said that they should always be treated as rumors as oppose to information that has been officially confirmed. That just it! Not that I am expecting Supernatural to be cancelled after season seven from a fan POV, I just prefer to wait for the confirmation from the network. Right? I mean, people just believe whatever is out there regardless the source. So I won't post any serious rumor about season eight.

This is no rumor, Misha Collins is indeed returning to Supernatural. PUNKD has tweeted this photo of Misha, Victoria and West arriving at the airport. WIN!!!!!

Random Wednesday Edition - Supernatural; The Hobbit; A Game of Thrones; Jeremy Carver

First thing first... The voting campaign was going HOT on Twitter and Facebook recently. Supernatural fans don't fail when it comes to voting. So we voted around the clock to make sure our favorite show wins. Should they win anything (Best TV Drama or Sci-Fi), I bet we will see Jensen and Jared on the Awards night, hosted by The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco on January 11, 2012. Here is a great promo for the Warner Channel. This is a cable channel for Latin America and Asia (not to be confused by Warner Bros TV Network). This is owned by Time Warner's HBO Asia/HBO Latin America Group (as a joint venture with sister company Warner Bros.)




The first official trailer of The Hobbit was released today. I have to say, this looks so much better than I expect, not that I was expecting anything less. This is going to be epic! This is definitely done in the spirit of LOTRs, I am glad Peter Jackson came on board for this. It's been like ten years since the premier of the Fellowship of the Rings.




For those who have been following me on Twitter, you'd realise I've been checking in for A Game Thrones. I've been watching and reading the series. After a few months searching for a new show or two to follow, finally I am happy to declare myself as a fan of A Game of Thrones. True Blood didn't really capture my attention, I still haven't checked out Vampire Diaries. I am disappointed with America Horror Story, I keep forgetting to watch Ringer, and I don't really care about Terra Nova, which is on the same level as Merlin -- I may watch it if I happen to be in front of the TV. I've heard great things about Homeland, this could fill my 24 hole and I have high hopes for Once Upon A Time and Alcatraz, they make it to my to-watch-list. Both Homeland and Alcatraz are coming to Australia on Channel Ten and Nine respectively.

So, back to A Game of Thrones, I intent to blog about it from this point forward, please join me in welcoming the series to the Impala's Trunk. I have just finished reading A Song of Ice and Fire, I shall move on to book 2, Clash of the Kings.

One last thing, another show that I am warming to is Being Human (US). This show has potential and I do love the relationship between the housemates. Not to mention it's by Jeremy Carver. And I love the soundtrack of the show, the playlist is slowly filling up. Speaking of Jeremy Caver, I have been listening to the Nerdist Writers Panel, Jeremy Caver was on the panel awhile ago, he was awesome and inspiring! I want to be Carver Edlund when I grow up as a writer. You can search Nerdist Writers Panel on iTune, this is truly gold.
